Live Local
Here's how to do it:
1. Go slow - walk or bike around your nighbourhood. Watch the seasons change and the plants grow. Become an intimate part of where you are.
2. Being Neighbourly - smile at someone on your street, help carry bags for someone who's overloaded. Lending tools, swapping produce, walking someones dog.... it feels great to connect!
3. Working Locally - work within walking or biking distance, work for a local company, work on a job that benefits your local community
4. Volunteering Locally - If you can't afford to move closer to your jobs, and/or just plain love what you do and don’t want to change it.
Another option is to volunteer to get involved in your local community. Pick something you feel very strongly about, and look for local groups who are working toward that goal. COMMUNITY GARDEN. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT. CONSERVATION. FOOD BANK
5. Supporting Local Businesses - When we need something look for it locally first (walking distance if possible). Even if we have to buy online look for businesses as close to your town as you can.
6. Supporting a Local Barter Economy - The idea is to keep goods and services within your own community, to support the local economy, to keep down personal costs, and to create connections within the community.  E.g - Libraries, Trademe, garage sales, markets, op shops, Timebanks.
7. Supporting Local Green Infrastructure - Utilize public resources e.g Transportation: This includes buses, trains, and carpools - Local Government: Make sure to keep up on local politics and VOTE - Public Works: Utilize and advocate for parks, bike trails, community food gardens, museums, urban green corridors.
8. Going to Community Events
9. Eating Locally - Learning what food is available locally and supporting those businesses. It will probably take some time to find local foods in your area but be patient and stick at it: co-ops, community gardens, organic stores, neighbours gardens, local farms.
